Let this be a Happy Diwali!

The festive season is here and so is the noise and pollution. It’s absolutely tragic how the festival of lights has turned into a vulgar display of who bursts the most number of crackers and causes the biggest nuisance. It’s nice to see this ‘festive spirit’ but not many are aware that while they are enjoying their festivities, there are many who have to suffer because of their insensitivity. Air pollution reaches a massive high during Diwali and those with Asthma and other breathing ailments have a really tough time. Infants and little children cry helplessly because of all the noise, and not to forget our senior citizens, who suffer from increased blood pressure and other ailments around this time. Animals have a heightened sense of hearing, so they hear this noise 2X louder than we do. Just imagine how bad that could be! I have a pet, and I feel absolutely helpless when I see his plight!

A friend of mine who works for Red Cross just told me how these crackers are made by little children aged 7-15 years. They are made to work 16 hours a day for as little as 5-30RS a day and fed just 2 onions and a roti. All the chemicals in the factory also take a toll on their health and they live only till their early 20s! Just think of the number of children who are robbed of their childhood to make these crackers for you… If we stopped buying crackers, this exploitation will stop too!

The point being, it’s easy to turn a deaf ear (or is it the crackers!) to all this and ignore it under the garb of festive spirit, but this is the reality. It’s not worth making others suffer. Use the money you would use to buy these crackers to buy sweets and cloths for an under privileged child instead, you will be blessed, as opposed to the number of people who'll curse you every time you light that rassi bomb!

Be responsible, at least this year, and let this be a happy and peaceful Diwali for everyone! Spread the word.
